Nowadays, walk into almost any electrical shop and you will see TVs carrying words such as:
Mini LED
QD Mini LED
Mini LED Dimming
Local Dimming
QLED
Precision Dimming
To an ordinary customer, they may all sound almost the same.
But they are NOT necessarily the same technology, and they definitely may not deliver the same picture quality.
At JH HOME, we believe customers should understand what they are actually paying for instead of buying a TV simply because the words “Mini LED” appear somewhere on the box or specification sheet.
First: What Is QD Mini LED?
A QD Mini LED television combines two important display technologies:
1. Quantum Dot / QLED
Quantum Dot technology helps the TV produce a wider, richer and more vibrant range of colours.
2. Mini LED Backlight
Instead of relying on larger conventional LEDs, Mini LED televisions use much smaller LEDs behind the LCD panel.
Because the LEDs are smaller, manufacturers can fit more light sources behind the screen and divide the backlight into more precisely controlled areas.
These areas are commonly called:
Local Dimming Zones
So, in simple terms:
QD MINI LED =
QUANTUM DOT + MINI LED BACKLIGHT + LOCAL DIMMING CONTROL
When properly implemented, this combination can give you:
Higher brightness
Better HDR
Deeper blacks
Higher contrast
Richer colours
More precise light control
Less blooming around bright objects
Better picture performance in difficult dark scenes
A Good Example: Skyworth SUE9800 QD-Mini LED
Take the Skyworth SUE9800 as an example.
Skyworth officially classifies this television as a QD-MiniLED TV.
It combines Quantum Dot colour technology with Mini LED lighting technology rather than relying purely on a marketing term containing the word “Mini LED”.
Skyworth's official specifications specifically list:
QD-MiniLED
Dual-Chip 16 Crystal Mini LED
144Hz + MEMC
Dolby Vision
HDR10+
This is the type of specification customers should look for when evaluating whether they are actually buying a higher-tier Mini LED television.
The important point is not simply that the words “Mini LED” appear in the advertisement.
The important point is:
What technology is actually behind the panel?
Then What Is “Mini LED Dimming”?
This is where customers need to pay attention.
The word “dimming” describes how a television controls its backlight.
Local dimming means different portions of the backlight can reduce or increase their brightness according to what is displayed on the screen.
However:
LOCAL DIMMING ≠ AUTOMATICALLY QD MINI LED
And:
“MINI LED” WRITTEN IN A PRODUCT NAME DOES NOT TELL YOU EVERYTHING ABOUT ITS PERFORMANCE.
Different TVs can have dramatically different:
Backlight designs
Number of LEDs
Local dimming zones
Peak brightness
Quantum Dot capability
Panel quality
Processing
Dimming algorithms
This is why customers should never compare TVs using the words “Mini LED” alone.
The 5 Things You Should Check Before Buying a Mini LED TV
1. Check Whether It Has Quantum Dot
If you are paying for a QD Mini LED TV, the television should combine:
Quantum Dot colour technology
with
Mini LED backlighting
Remember:
MINI LED DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN QD MINI LED.
A TV can use a Mini LED backlight without having Quantum Dot colour technology.
So instead of simply asking:
“Boss, this one Mini LED ah?”
Ask:
“This is QD Mini LED or Mini LED only?”
That is already a much better question.
2. Ask About Local Dimming Zones
This is one of the most important things to understand.
The television's backlight can be divided into separate areas called local dimming zones.
The TV can brighten or darken these zones according to what is appearing on screen.
Imagine this scene:
A completely black night sky.
In the middle of the screen is one bright moon.
🌙
A good Mini LED television should try to keep the surrounding sky dark while making the moon bright.
If the backlight control is poor, you may see a large glowing area surrounding the moon.
This effect is commonly known as:
BLOOMING
Better local dimming control can help the TV maintain:
Bright object = Bright
while keeping:
Dark background = Dark
This is one of the major reasons customers pay extra for Mini LED technology.
3. Don't Confuse LEDs With Dimming Zones
This is very important.
Suppose a manufacturer tells you:
“This TV has thousands of Mini LEDs!”
Sounds impressive.
But that does NOT necessarily mean:
5,000 MINI LEDs = 5,000 DIMMING ZONES
Multiple Mini LEDs can operate together within one dimming zone.
Therefore, customers should understand the difference between:
Number of Mini LEDs
and
Number of independently controlled local dimming zones
They are not automatically the same thing.
A huge LED number on an advertisement does not automatically tell you how precisely the TV can control its backlight.
4. Check the Peak Brightness
Brightness is another important characteristic of a good Mini LED television.
This becomes especially obvious when watching HDR content.
For example:
☀️ Sunlight
🔥 Fire
✨ Reflections
💡 Streetlights
🎆 Fireworks
🚗 Headlights at night
A television with good HDR brightness can make these highlights look extremely bright while still maintaining details in darker portions of the picture.
So don't only ask:
“Got HDR?”
Almost every modern television supports some form of HDR.
Instead ask:
“What is the peak brightness?”
Two televisions can both say:
4K + HDR + Mini LED
on the box.
Yet their actual HDR performance can be completely different.
5. Look at the Actual Picture — Especially Dark Scenes
Specifications matter.
But your eyes matter too.
When comparing TVs at JH HOME or any other electrical shop, ask the salesperson to play difficult dark scenes.
Good examples include:
Stars against a black background
A moon in a night sky
Fireworks
City lights at night
White subtitles on a black background
Bright objects moving across dark scenes
Then look around the bright object.
If you see a huge glowing patch surrounding it, the television's backlight control may not be very precise.
A better Mini LED implementation should generally give you:
DEEPER BLACKS
BRIGHTER HIGHLIGHTS
BETTER LIGHT CONTROL
LESS BLOOMING
That is the difference customers should actually care about.
Quick Comparison
| What to Check | Proper QD Mini LED | What Customers Should Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|
| Quantum Dot | Yes | May not have Quantum Dot |
| Mini LED Backlight | Clearly specified | Don't judge from marketing words alone |
| Local Dimming | Yes | “Dimming” terminology without clear explanation |
| Dimming Zones | More precise zone control is desirable | Zone information not disclosed |
| Peak Brightness | Clear brightness capability | Only says “HDR” |
| Black Control | Better control of bright/dark areas | Excessive blooming |
| Colour | Quantum Dot wide colour capability | Conventional colour system |
| Specifications | Technology clearly explained | Mostly marketing terminology |
Are All QD Mini LED TVs the Same?
NO.
This is another common misunderstanding.
Even if two televisions are both genuine QD Mini LED televisions, they can still perform very differently.
For example, their:
Dimming-zone count
Peak brightness
Panel
Quantum Dot implementation
Picture processor
Backlight design
Local dimming algorithm
Refresh rate
can all be different.
Therefore:
“QD MINI LED” TELLS YOU THE TECHNOLOGY CATEGORY.
It does NOT automatically tell you how good that particular television is.
This is why customers should compare:
SPECIFICATION VS SPECIFICATION
rather than:
NAME VS NAME.
Don't See “Mini LED” Three Words and Assume Everything Is the Same
This is probably the most important advice in this entire article.
Today, TV marketing is extremely competitive.
Words such as:
AI
QLED
Mini LED
HDR
120Hz
can appear everywhere.
But as a customer, you should always ask:
What is actually inside the TV?
Not:
How big are the words printed on the box?
For example, Skyworth's SUE9800 clearly identifies its display technology as QD-MiniLED, while Skyworth's own product range also contains Mini LED models and separate QLED models — demonstrating why customers should look at the exact panel/backlight specification instead of assuming every similarly named TV uses identical technology.
JH HOME's 4 Questions Before Buying a Mini LED TV
The next time somebody tells you:
“Boss, this one Mini LED!”
Don't immediately take out your credit card.
Ask them these four questions first:
1. IS IT QUANTUM DOT / QLED?
2. IS THE BACKLIGHT ACTUALLY MINI LED?
3. HOW MANY LOCAL DIMMING ZONES DOES IT HAVE?
4. WHAT IS ITS PEAK BRIGHTNESS?
If you are comparing two TVs and one seller cannot clearly explain these basic specifications:
DON'T JUST LOOK AT THE “MINI LED” STICKER.
Do more comparison first.
Don't Buy the Words. Buy the Technology.
At JH HOME, we believe customers deserve to understand what they are buying.
A bigger:
“MINI LED”
logo on the box does not automatically give you better picture quality.
Understand the technology.
Compare the specifications.
Compare the dimming performance.
Check the actual picture.
And then compare the price.
Because ultimately:
DON'T PAY PREMIUM TV MONEY FOR ENTRY-LEVEL TV PERFORMANCE.
